On Saturday 13th May two players from Milton Keynes based Cavill Academy competed in the U12’s Junior Matchplay event held at the Riverside Tennis Club in Bedford. Both Megan Jones and Freya Berkin, aged 11, travelled to the LTA sanctioned event along with other girls in their rating division. Freya struggled in her first match, losing 6-2, 6-1 against some strong opposition. In her second match she managed to battle with her opponent having taken the first set 6-4 but then losing the second set 7-6. The 3rd set tie-breaker unfortunately went against Freya who was finally defeated 10-5.

Current Bucks number 10 Under 12 girls player, Megan, who recently was the girl’s runner-up in the U12’s LTA Sanction event in April, was continuing to show great form. She has just moved up a rating and is continuing to defeat players rated 2 levels above her. In her first match she coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stephanie Savage, taking the match in her stride. In the second match she had to show great determination whilst playing Bedfordshire’s top 5 ranked player, Evie Harrison. In the first set Megan was behind all the way, having had a set point against her, but she continued to hold her nerve in the tie-breaker, which she won convincingly 7-1. With the moment firmly going in Megans direction, she continued to keep the pressure on Evie and stormed the second set 6-1.

After the matches Megan admitted that she wasn’t playing at her best but was pleased with the effort and determination she showed to grind out the victories.

The next match for the Cavill Academy is on Saturday 27th May where the team travel to Dallington Tennis Club for an inter-club match against Northamptonshire players.
