2006 Victory For Local Tennis TalentSuccess is becoming a habit for Milton Keynes based Cavill Academy as two of the players celebrated success over the half term break.

It was a busy week for the Cavill Academy with 3 players competing in Stony Stratford, Aylesbury and Chesham. On Friday 2nd June, Freya Berkin competed in the LTA Sanctioned tournament at Stony Stratford Tennis Club. Unfortunately there were only 2 girls that had entered the event, which resulted in a straight final being played. Freya found the match against local opponent Samantha Shaw a struggle, as she battled to try and find consistency. She produce moments of magic with some very aggressive shots but as the frustration of not being able to link everything together built up, she unfortunately was defeated 6-4, 6-3.

2006 Victory For Local Tennis TalentOn the same day in Aylesbury, young talent Kyle MacQueen played some terrific tennis in the U13’s Started Tennis Tournament held at Aylesbury Tennis Club. MacQueen, who is only 8-years old, comfortably defeated his 9-year old opponent 6-1, 6-0 in the first match. He proved to be too strong and consistent for his opponent, which ultimately won him the match. In the second match he came up against a 12-year old from Aylesbury. Kyle took the initiative, making his opponent cover the court franticly, which resulted in him taking the first set 6-2. Kyle’s opponent then made some interesting adjustments to his game and managed to turn the match around by winning the second set 6-3. With the match coming down to a 3rd set tiebreaker, Kyle had a slow start by going 3-0 down immediately, as fatigue was setting in. But the determined Milton Keynes schoolboy took the challenge in hand and fought back to take the match tiebreaker 10-7 and secure victory.

Throughout the whole week Megan Jones, whose has recently turned 12 years old, was travelling to Chesham Bois Tennis Club to compete in 2006 Victory For Local Tennis Talentthe LTA Grand Prix Series tournament. This is a grade 3 event that attracts National level players in all the age groups. On Tuesday 30th May Megan played Imogen Hargreaves from Essex in the first round of the Under 12 girls singles. Megan was very stable from the beginning, taking the first set 6-3, after her opponent was making too many mistakes. The second set was a different story as Imogen started to convert her chances and took the second set 6-4. The match came down to a 3rd set tiebreaker that Imogen lead from the start and won 10-5.

Megan was then entered into the consolation draw where they play short sets (first to 4 games). In the first round she faced Bethany Fairbairn from Bucks and won 4-1, 4-0. Megan went on to fly through the second round after defeating Fiona Taylor from Bucks 4-1, 4-1 and then moved into the final after beating Lindsay Young from Berks 4-0, 4-2. In the final Megan faced Bucks player Isabel Maloney. The pair competed for just over an hour with Megan playing some lovely tennis and hitting some outstanding winners to take the match 4-1, 4-2.

Cavill Academy coach, John Cavill said, “It’s been a great week for all competing and as every event goes by, the players are learning more and more about themselves and how to play the game to win. We have a long summer of tournaments ahead of us so hopefully the players can continue to perform well and get good results.”
