With Andy Murray in the public spot light after winning his second Masters Series event of the year, the local tennis spotlight is on the Cavill Academy. The academy was established in 2005 by Tennis Works founder John Cavill and has previously been training solely at Woughton Leisure Centre in Milton Keynes. The academy provides a comprehensive and high intensity training environment for Under 14’s to improve their game for competition with National level coaches. Since September, Tennis Works and Stony Stratford Lawn Tennis Club have joined forces to ensure that the future tennis talent is being nurtured within a club environment, which will benefit all. Stony Stratford Lawn Tennis Club’s objective is to be ‘the premier family tennis club in North Bucks’. The club lives up to it’s objectives by offering all levels of tennis and social activity that any family would wish for, including fantastic floodlit facilities, comprehensive coaching programme and a welcoming social scene. The club is one of only 3 in the whole of Bucks and the only club in Milton Keynes that has attained the new Tennis Clubmark standard, which all clubs across the country are working towards. The news of the Cavill Academy being based at Stony Stratford Lawn Tennis Club is great for all in the area as a new local competitive calendar has been launched, which invites all players from any club to compete in the Mini and Junior Tennis Tournaments on a regular basis. Competition is basis of which performance is built on and as the tournament attendance grows, so will the level of tennis in Milton Keynes. Academy founder, John Cavill, said, “I’m delighted to have the club as the new academy base, as we provide performance and they provide club tennis, so combined together both areas will benefit. The facilities and environment are great for our players to train and compete, which will make a big difference in their long term development.” The Cavill Academy will continue to have some of their activity at Woughton Leisure Centre, including the brand new Tennis Development Programme (TDP), which is open to anyone who is interested in competing. The TDP scouts for potential talent to feed the best into the Cavill Academy and anyone is welcome to have a free trial. Released: 23 October 2008
