Team GB 14&Under consisting of Josh Sapwell, Alex Sendegeya and Peter Ashley flew out to Magaluf, Spain last Friday in preparation for the European Team Summer Cup Qualifiers, which started on Monday. GB were drawn against Portugal in the 1st round with Josh playing at No.1 in the singles rubber. Rankings wise Portugal were the weakest team in the qualifying and Team GB were far too strong for the opposition. Josh ran out and easy winner 6-1 6-1, dominating with his serve and penetrating ground-strokes. The team won both the singles rubbers and the doubles rubber, dropping only 10 games in the process.

Sapwell Dominates the Courts PDF Print E-mail

On Wednesday Josh faced Italian Elia Albertarelli, a qualifier who had won 3 matches to get to this stage. Josh still suffering from a bad cold struggled with his movement but his overall power on serve and groundstrokes was too much for his opponent and he ran out a comfortable winner 6-0 6-2. On Thursday in the last 16 he faced  Felix Schumann from Germany who had put out the 10th seed in the previous round. Fortunately Josh's health had improved for this tougher match and he produced a very solid display, dominating the rallies in a 6-1 6-2 victory. On Friday Josh will play his quarter finals of singles and has also reached the quarters of the doubles with his regular partner Alexander Sendegeya.

Sapwell Wins in Maia PDF Print E-mail

Josh arrived in Maia, Portugal full of cold but happy that he would be playing on centre court against a local player. He faced Bernardo Oliveira who had very little experience at this level. This showed as Josh took control of the match very quickly and proved far too strong for his opponent. Playing well within his capabilities Josh finished the match in 31 minutes winning 6-0 6-0. A good match for Josh giving him the rest of the day to recover from his cold and prepare for Wednesday's match singles and doubles.

Released: 07 April 2010

Sapwell in the Livorno Finals PDF Print E-mail

Monday was final's day and unfortunately a day to forget for Josh! Josh had developed a cold since the semi-finals and woke up on the day of the final under the weather and very lethargic. With very little energy his opponent Andre Biro took control of the match very quickly and Josh had no answers on the day going down 6-2 6-1. Josh was obviously very disappointed that he could not bring his "A" game to the court but overall pleased with the weeks performances.
